What is a bedside cot?

A bedside crib, also referred to as a bassinet or co-sleeper, is a small baby cot that is attached to an adult bed. This allows your baby to sleep next to you in peace. This is a type of co-sleeping in a safe manner that does not increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) like bedsharing, and can help you bond with your new arrival.

These cots have a side which can be adjusted to allow you to reach your baby easily at night to comfort and feed them. This is particularly helpful for mums recovering from a c-section. Many are also portable or foldable, so you can take them on trips and use them as a temporary sleep solution for newborns who aren't ready to transition to a larger cot.

When you are looking for a crib that is bedside, look for a model that has a breathable mattress and a cover to protect your newborn from stains. You'll also want to buy baby-safe items such as a blanket, a teether and a soft toy.

If you're looking for a longer-term option, some cribs have conversion kits that let you transform them into a cot or toddler bed at the time of need. This will extend their life and make the transition easier. Some even have a detachable top section that can be converted into a bassinet, and some can be used on either the regular or high-rise adult bed. This is a good choice for families who plan on frequently traveling or switching rooms throughout the night. Consider the dimensions of your room to ensure you fit in the crib comfortably. A lot of cribs have a riser which can be used to create an incline for babies with reflux.

The Joie Roomie Glide

Known for their high-quality baby products for babies, the English brand Joie has stepped into the world of bedside cribs with the Roomie Glide. Designed to allow parents to bond with their infants while they sleep side by side without sharing a bed. This co-sleeper comes with features that make bonding between parents and babies enjoyable, safe and easy.

A smooth rocking motion can be initiated by pressing a button. This can soothe baby into sleep by a gentle rhythm that doesn't disturb their natural sleeping pattern. This is perfect for toddlers or older babies who are having trouble settling down. It can also help with digestive issues like reflux and colic.

The crib can also be attached to the side of the bed using clips and straps. This makes the crib solid and secure which allows you to rest comfortably without fearing that your baby will roll off into the middle. The rounded shape of the cocoon features soft padding on the sides as well as double mesh windows on both ends. This allows for airflow while ensuring your baby's safety.

The included mattress is comfortable and firm. It also includes a washable cover. The aluminum frame is lightweight, making the crib very portable and easy to assemble. The four lockable rubber-covered wheels ensure that the crib does not leave marks on your floors and are easy to move. It is easy to clean with cloths that wipe clean and is easy to put in a bag for travel, making it ideal for extended stays away from home.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air

It is designed to be a secure crib that can be used as a next-to-me crib from birth until six months old, this top model comes with rocking bars as well as castors to allow for ease of movement. The airflow mattresses are deluxe and provide an ideal sleeping surface and ventilation panels help keep your baby cool. There are 6 different height settings, including an incline setting to aid with congestion and reflux.

The Tutti Bambini COZee air crib has a removable fabric and a wipe-clean lining. This makes it easier to clean than bedside cribs which can create messy to clean. Additionally, it comes with a top bar that can be easily lowered for nighttime feeds without needing to fumble with zips in the dark.

Anna discovered that the CoZee could be a safe, comfortable place to sleep for her infant. She was pleased that it didn't move like other models, which meant she wasn't disturbed in the night trying to soothe her child during feedings. She also liked that the sides of the chair was lowered so that she didn't have to reach over her partner in order to carry the child out for nighttime feedings.

The CoZee is available in oak or charcoal and is a chic option for any bedroom. It looks more like an expensive piece of furniture than many of the other cribs we've tested, which can appear quite utilitarian. It's also quite light at just 11kg, and comes with a carry case which allows you to take it with you on holiday or if moving home. You only need to purchase a waterproof sheet and a safety strap for co-sleeping. There are step-bystep instructions and illustrations to help you put it together when you first open the box, making it a one-person job when needed.

The Maxi-Cosi lora

The Iora is a bassinet that can be placed at the bedside that helps parents feel closer to their child while they sleep. It adjusts upwards and downwards and slides through three positions to fit beside the parent's bed, or in the corner of the room, so that the baby is always within arm's reach. The mesh siding lets air circulate through, allowing you to see your baby easily. You can also keep any extra pajamas or items in the large basket beneath.

The Iora is a smaller bedside cot that folds flat. It also comes with a travel case so it can be carried anywhere. Our mum testers were able to move it from room to room and believed that it was a suitable size for a small bedside cot, not too big or too small. They also liked the large storage basket perfect for storing nappies or other bedding items.

This is a great choice for parents who want to sleep in a co-sleeping arrangement but don't want to share their own beds or whose partners may be prone to mobility issues, such as back problems or arthritis. Our mum testers loved that they could easily access their baby while in the Iora and that it had an option to have a reflux incline which helped to reduce gas.

Our mums appreciate the fact that it meets NICE guidelines that state to put the infant in the crib or Moses basket on its own (with no toys, blankets, pillows, etc). The mattress is also a good firm and comfortable for babies and sheets are easily available. It isn't as light as other cribs that are smaller however it is a good choice if you are looking for something lighter and easier to move around, look at other options in our list.
